This year's green focus at BEST WESTERN PLUS Castle Green Hotel in Kendal was to retain our silver status for the Green Tourism Business Award – but we did better than that and achieved Gold!
Green Tourism Business Scheme
Our Inspector on his last visit commented that we "had an outstanding commitment to local suppliers particularly with food and drink. Also strong was good monitoring and training for staff to help improve environmental performance, good recycling practices and active support for local good causes." We just have to ensure we keep it now!
Other green projects…
Pete Crane, Maintenance Manager, and his team completed their work on the Woodland Trail and we have successfully reopened the woods for guests to enjoy the diverse wildlife and plant species.
The Orchard - Pete, along with Executive Chef Justin have now planted some apple trees at the front of the hotel, we enjoyed our first apple last year and are hoping for more this time around.
New for this year will be our ‘Bownessie Trail’ where children can spot the new Lake District character throughout the Woodland walk as he spots the local wildlife. See him walking through the woods at the back of the hotel - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QicwtJsHL58
Nature Diary - Pete, John and Dave have been listing all the wildlife and plants we have at Castle Green and have come up with an impressively long list. Of particular note is our resident Kestrel in Alexander's The Pub, our great crested newts in the bottom car park and our great spotted woodpecker in the woods. We will soon be placing a nature diary in the lounge for guests to log their finds!
