With many businesses closed and shopping hours reduced, spend your August Bank Holiday exploring the South Lakes. Take in the sun, learn something new, and practice self-care because you deserve it. Our hotel is within walking distance of the beautiful Kendal Castle ruins, and only a short drive to Sizergh Castle, where you can discover the area’s heritage and stunning environment.
The Sizergh Silk Road: from Goa to Antwerp
Be among the first people to see the rediscovered goan bedspread of James II, gifted to the Strickland family as a thank you for their loyalty in the 17th century. Also, featured at the castle is a complete set of five 17th-century Flemish tapestries that depict Plutarch’s (and later Shakespeare’s) famous story and are the largest surviving weavings of this series across the globe. Learn about how they’re cared for before they’re moved to Belgium for specialist treatment.
Cecilia’s Story: A Life in Letters
Cecilia is an 18th century mistress who lived in Sizergh Castle and you can follow her journey of love, loss and hope through her surviving letters. While you’re there, treat yourself to a slice of chocolate and rum pavlova cake, inspired by the sweet chestnut seeds Cecilia planted following her trip to Versailles. These trees still stand along Ashbank Lane today and are certainly worth a look.
Guided Walk: Sizergh Fell
Enjoy a 1.5 mile guided stroll across Sizergh’s farm estate. Discover significant archaeological sites, including a prehistoric burial mound, and witness the breath-taking views over Morecambe Bay. Sizergh Fell’s limestone grassland is filled to the brim with life, from diverse grasses and flora, to woodland creatures, aviators, and grazing cattle. Sturdy footwear is recommended for this hour and a half walk through uneven land.
